TOWN OF FLORIDA - An Amsterdam man has been charged with criminal sex act in the town of Florida, Montgomery County Sheriff's officials said.

David H. Putnam, 73, of Amsterdam, was charged Tuesday with one count of first-degree criminal sex act, a felony.

If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison.

The investigation began with when a 19-year-old alleged forced sexual contact in July 2023, officials said.

Investigators then collected forensic evidence that supported the allegations. In February, investigators were granted a search warrant from Montgomery County Court and were able to gather further evidence, officials said.

They were then able to obtain an arrest warrant and took Putnam into custody Tuesday.

Putnam was arraigned in Florida Town Court and ordered held on $5,000 bail.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office was assisted in the investigation by Montgomery County District Attorney Lorraine Diamond and members of the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Center.
