Carmela Simiele, 98, of Amsterdam, NY passed away peacefully on Wednesday at St. Mary's Healthcare with her loving family by her side.
Carmela was born in March of 1915 to Donato and Antoinette Simiele. She was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam.
She held many jobs during her working years, with the bulk of her career at Fairchild Electrometrics. Following her retirement, Carm became the first Director of the Office of the Aging, established in 1975 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
During her lifetime, she traveled extensively throughout Europe and America with her many friends and family. In recent years she enjoyed playing cards and spending time at the Inman Center. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church was an important part of her life and throughout the years she could be relied upon for volunteer work.
Along with her parents, Carmela Simiele was predeceased by her siblings, Joseph Simiele, Helen Wihelm and Ceil Scheckton as well as her nephew, Danny Simiele. Additionally, she is survived by her beloved nieces and nephews including, Marilyn Quatrini (Bill Dzierson), Francis Scheckton, Roberta Morreale, Elaine (Peter) Vertucci and James (Lorraine) Scheckton. Carmela is also survived by three generations of great nephews and nieces and many loving cousins and extended family. She will be missed by all.
Calling hours will be held today (Friday) from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the DeStefano Funeral Home, Rte 5-S, Amsterdam.
Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday March 23 at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
